How would you like to go on a personal tour of the ancient pyramids of Egypt, explore the marine biomes of the Great Barrier Reef, take a stroll on Mars, before enjoying the sunset on top of the tallest building in the world in Dubai… without even leaving your classroom? With Virtual Reality you can! Originally a product of science fiction, virtual reality (VR) is quickly entering and redefining the education landscape as the next wave of the Digital Revolution and offering one of the greatest opportunities to transform learning experiences across the curriculum from STEM to digital humanities and medical education. VR technologies allow a literature teacher in Chicago to “take” her students to Verona to look at the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, or a teacher in the Bronx to “bring” her Ancient Civilizations class to the ancient Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza. And experiments suggest this is only the beginning—VR could become a social platform that will transform how we communicate, create, and collaborate, provide new experiences that would not otherwise be possible, increase student motivation and inspire creative learning. In this workshop we will:
- review recent developments in virtual reality
-address the challenges of adoption and implementation of immersive experiences that foster student engagement and creativity
- identify devices, content examples, practices and strategies
- and most importantly, have fun!
“Virtual Reality, like rock n’ roll, is not something that can be described well. It must be experienced in order to be fully appreciated and understood.”
